Epiphany 2019: In the Boat With the Three Wise Men

EPIPHANY ON JANUARY 6

Epiphany on January 6 is a very special date. Epiphany means the festival of manifestation. We celebrate three different events at once, which are all supposed to have happened on a 6th of January: the arrival of the Wise Men from the East in Bethlehem, the baptism of Jesus, and Jesus's first miracle, turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana. The Japanese artist Sadao Watanabe has created a painting entitled "The Three Wise Men", which we want to discover together with the children at the Epiphany Children's Service.

EMSO, THE ELEPHANT, IN JAPAN

Emso, the big elephant, looked at the painting in Japan and brought it to the children. A joint viewing of the painting allows the children to immerse themselves in the picture and also in the Japanese context. Two theological impulses give suggestions on how the group can work with the picture, which biblical passages fit and how they could be interpreted. Questions for looking at a picture facilitate the preparation for the work with the children and open up the picture creatively. Those who wish can conclude the Children's Service by having the children paint their picture of how the Wise Men would come to them.

QUESTIONS FOR LOOKING AT THE PICTURE WITH THE CHILDREN

What colours can you discover in the picture?

What effect do the colours have on you?

Which stories from the bible do you know in which water and boats play a role?

And this is an interesting point: Here, the Wise Men are travelling in a boat on the water. How is that portrayed in your country? Do they also travel on the water?

If you are interested in spending Epiphany with Emso and the children to discover the Japanese painting and the story around the wise men, you can order the booklet free of charge in different languages. It has been published in German, English and Indonesian. You can download it here: ems-online.org/en/active-worldwide/global-learning-with-children/

I wish you a Happy New Year 2019!

Yours, Annette

There is nothing more exciting than talking with children about justice. There is nothing more beautiful to experience how creative children think about our future and how they develop interest for each other.
