Pentecost – a very special Christian Festival
50 days after celebrating Easter, Christians worldwide celebrate the next festival: Pentecost. The word "Pentecost" already reveals when the festival takes place: It comes from old Greek "pentēkostē hēméra", that means "fiftieth day" after Easter. At Pentecost the Holy Spirit was descending on the followers and apostles of Jesus Christ. A few days before, we celebrate the fest of the Ascension Day when Jesus Christ was ascending to heaven. Through Gods Holy Spirit, which he gave us on Pentecost, we are still very closely connected to God.
When the apostles and the disciples were gathering and received the Holy Spirit on the very first Pentecost, they were really touched and they began to preach in languages of different nations. That is the reason why we also celebrate the birthday of the church and the worldwide mission on Pentecost. It all started on that very day.
2017 is a special year because Christians worldwide also celebrate the 500th anniversary of the reformation (Yes, there is a lot to celebrate :-) ). In the jubilee year, the Lutheran Church of Württemberg, Germany hosts the celebration of the worldwide church and mission on White Monday (05 June 2017) in Stuttgart. The children's programme YOU+ME: FRIENDS AROUND THE WORLD is also involved in the activities of the day and offers a programme for children:
10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Children's Service, Stiftskirche Stuttgart
There will be a children's service in the upper sacristy at the same time as the church service for adults will be taking place. The elephant Emso and the children meet at the main entrance of the church and we will the go upstairs together. The little bird Pipit, Emso's best friend, will also join us. Altogether we will go on an exciting journey to Capernaum and meet Jesus and his friends there. We will sing, celebrate, worship and pray together and we get to know what children worldwide discover in the bible and what moves them.
After the service the children will meet their parents again and together with them they will join the parade to the Hospitalhof.
