The Lord’s Prayer – Around The World

Connected Through the Lord's Prayer

We are happily working on the DIVERSITY booklet which will be coming soon. But today we already want you to get a tiny inside look into the booklet.

The children in our EMS-Network are talking open-hearted about their believes and their churches. No matter where the children are from - they all enjoy praying to God. The one prayer that Christians all around the world join together, is the well-known Lord's Prayer.

In the New Testament, Jesus teaches his disciples the Lord's Prayer. A prayer directly to God, our father, to open ourselves up to God and ask him for forgiveness, help and his blessing. As there are so many translations of the bible into the languages of our world, there are just as many translations of the Lord's Prayer. Isn't it exciting how all Christians around the world are connected in the Lord's Prayer?

The Lord's Prayer in the Bibel

The Prayer, as we know it, is written in Mathew 6:9-13. Whatsoever, you will also find an account of the Lord's prayer in the Gospel of Luke: "Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.' And he said to them, 'When you pray, say: 'Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.'' (Luke 11:1-4).

Inspirational Ideas

The prayer is still often said collaboratively by the church community during Sunday service, till nowadays. But there are many ways to use and pray the Lord's Prayer in childrens' Sunday School as well.

IDEAS:

  • Write the Lord's Prayer on a large piece of paper and slowly talk it through, along with the children. What do the different aspects of the prayer mean and refer to? Die children may now think of movements or gestures to present the different words or phrases of the prayer. Then, collectively, say the Lord's Prayer as you join in the movements and gestures.

  • The Lord's Prayer can often be found in all sorts of music. The children can listen to examples of chorales, hymns, cantata, organ music or the opera in which the Lord's Prayer is used. Discuss what music does and how it might affect the Lord's Prayer.
